Thirunaraiyur Temple, also known as Thirunaraiyur Nambi Temple or Thirunaraiyur Nachiyar Koil, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Thirunaraiyur near Kumbakonam, in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India. This sacred temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, which are the holy abodes of Vishnu praised in the Divya Prabandham by the Alwars (Vaishnavite saints).
The presiding deity is Srinivasa Perumal (also called Nambi) and the unique aspect of the temple is the equal prominence given to Goddess Lakshmi, worshipped here as Nachiyar (Vanjulavalli Thayar). This temple is one of the few where the goddess is given precedence over the god during festivals and rituals, a tradition known as “Nachiyar Thirukolam”.
The temple is renowned for its Dravidian architecture, with intricate stone carvings, majestic gopurams (tower gateways), and detailed pillared halls. It is believed that Kal Garuda, the divine mount of Vishnu enshrined here, is a self-manifested (swayambu) idol and exhibits miraculous features during temple processions, where its weight increases gradually as more people are required to lift the idol at each stage
